A friend lost her husband suddenly. She didn’t want to sell her home and move, but was fretting about her living situation, and the yard work. “I’m going to have to move to maintenance-provided. He took care of everything, I can’t do it myself.”
“Are you mowing your lawn now?” I asked.
“No, I’m paying my neighbor to do it,” she replied.
“Well, you’re already living maintenance-provided, which simply means that you’re paying someone else to mow grass and shovel snow. If you move where there’s a high HOA fee, you’ll be paying for snow removal whether you need it or not. And chances are, you can hire a lawn crew that will cost less than the HOA fee.”
Some people don’t want to leave their home, but feel forced to as they age. With apps like Nextdoor, they can easily find recommended crews that work in their neighborhood, and can stay put, enjoying the familiarity of a neighborhood they know and love.
Just another way of looking at it.
When I work with people who are downsizing, they often believe that maintenance-provided is the only way to go, but it isn’t. They could still find a smaller home, but their choices don’t need to be so limited. Maybe it’s time to live their dream of a home in a small lake community. It’s always nice to have options!
If you are wanting to downsize but feel overwhelmed by the many decisions and the timing of everything that needs to happen within a short window of time, give me a call. One client recently commented that I lifted a huge load off of her shoulders. She had a plan, decided what she was keeping, and knew the best way to sell what she wasn’t taking with her. She was freed to execute her plan, and my work was done. If this sounds like a good fit for you, reach out to schedule your appointment today!
